Discord, what a creepy application

Why are so many communities moving over to Discord? It got horrible entry requirements (asking for phone number is unacceptable to me), and I don't know what benefit it gives over the established, other modern channels. I've tried it out in "read-only" mode a few times, it's just fragmentation of user communities in the negative sort of way. It's just so... dark, literally.

Actually, Discord doesn't ask for a phone number for anything, unless you want to have 2FA, and thats optional, never was i asked for a phone number, I was asked for a email address and a password, but never a phone number. And also, people are switching because its theoretically still maintained and its maintained under one group instead of having 5000 clients and servers that people have to host when discord hosts the servers themselves.

I'm not sure, but I don't think that IRC will be losing the market in the FOSS community any time soon.
Interestingly enough, James Wheare (IRCCloud founder) recently did a talk on the topic of chat fragmentation at freenode live.
